Fall 2011


Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest Results Congratulations to the following students whose artwork was recognized at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! The winners are Megan Daniels, senior, 2nd place ribbon; McKenna Chaviers, Junior, 2nd place ribbon; Andrew Glover, Junior,  2nd place ribbon; Kevin McGee, Senior, 1st place ribbon; Sarah St. John, Junior, finalist; Jasmine Ruiz, Senior, Gold Medal winner; and Harman Kaur, Junior, Best of Show. Jasmine's and Harman’s pieces are going into the 2nd round of competition and will be on display throughout the Rodeo in the Hayloft gallery.  In a few weeks, we will find out if their work will make it to auction. Congratulations to the winners and all the hard work and talent that went into the paintings.

Future Educators Advance to State Congratulations to Kailey Rountree, Erin Tutt, and Elyssa Howell, who placed in the 90th percentile on the Educational Leadership Fundamentals test at the Region V Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) conference in December. These young ladies will represent the LCM High School TAFE at the State Conference in February 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. Congratulations Kailey, Erin, and Elyssa!

Tutt Advances to State Congratulations to Erin Tutt, Vice President of TAFE, who won 1st place at regional competition on Thursday, December 8, in Lesson Plan Competition. She created a lesson plan and presented the lesson to a 2nd grade classroom at LCE. She will advance to state competition in February. Congratulations, Erin!

LCM Swimmers Excel  At the Beaumont Meet, the team of Ivy Casteel and Savannah Sheppard earned 28 team points. Ivy claimed 1st place in the girls 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 1:01.62 and finished 2nd in the Girls 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:18.71. Savannah placed 2nd in the Girls 100-Yard Breaststroke with 1:25.18 and placed 4th in the Girls 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 29.35 Congratulations!

Bears Open District Play with Win On Friday, December 16, the LCM Bears defeated Lumberton 51-18 to open District 20-4A play. Christian Wendt led with 11 points, Preston Armstrong added 10, and Leonard Curtis and Aaron Lilly each scored 9.

Lady Bear Freshman Team is 2-0 in District On Tuesday, December 13, the Lady Bulldogs came into the Bear Cave growling but left yelping. The Lady Bears Freshman team won 25-15 in a shootout to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in District. Tori Thompson led the way with 15 pts and several blocks. Malayzia Winbush did an outstanding job by crashing the boards. Kirty Weatherly and Kayla Netherly had excellent defense as usual and kept the tempo for the entire game. Angel Villanueva and Alexis Sezer tallied up many hustle points. The Lady Bears look to increase their winning streak and remain unbeaten in district play by facing the Lady Raiders of Lumberton on Friday.

Lady Bears Open District Play with a Win The Varsity Lady Bears opened district with a 40-36 win over Nederland on Tuesday, December 13.  Sophomore Carley Greene lead all scorers with 16 points and 6 steals.  Kayleigh Roy scored 10.

Newly Certified Nurse Aides Congratulations to the following CNA students--Aby Avery, Ashley Eby, Krista Phillips, Shelbey Wiggins, Ashley Benson, Brandi Manuel, and Dorshae Robinson--who took and passed their skills and written tests to become Certified Nurse Aides.

Debate Squad Places Well The Battlin' Bears Debate Squad attended the Sabine Pass tournament. Kara Stanford and Trey Mathis took 2nd place in team debate, and Alicia Hubbard and Ethan Parsons took 3rd place. Trey Mathis took 2nd place in persuasive speaking. Congratulations to these four students!

Lady Bears Play in Silsbee Tournament The Lady Bear varsity basketball team competed in the Silsbee Tournament, defeating Kirbyville, Cleveland and Lumberton and finishing 3-2 overall after a tough 2 point loss in triple overtime to end the tournament. Kelsey Fults had a standout tournament, averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds per game. Kayleigh Roy also averaged close to a double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds per outing. Led by tough guard defense, the Lady Bears held opponents in the tournament to an average of 30 points per game.

Team Force Bowling Results Team Force came away with several medals and ribbons at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament on Saturday, December 10. Clyde Jones won a 6th Place Ribbon;  Dustin Ducharme, Charles Kaufmann, Stephen Malagarie and Dustin Salvagio won 4th place ribbons; Hayden Wheeler earned a Bronze Medal; Courtney Chauvin and Mathew Kaufman earned Silver Medals; and Gold Medals went to Shane Kaufmann and Christina Snook. Congratulations to all these world-class athletes!

LCM Bears Win 3rd Place The LCM Bears won twice on Friday, December 9, in the Hardin-Jefferson Marathon Tournament. The Bears beat Port Aransas 41-28 to win Pool C. Preston Armstrong scored 17 and Jordan Wells 11. In their second game of the day they popped Dayton 51-29, outscoring the Broncos 31-19 in the second half. Armstrong and Wells were again the leading scorers with 17 and 15 points respectively. On Saturday, December 10, LCM began their day with a 58-39 loss to host Hardin-Jefferson, but they then won the third place game by beating Bastrop 59-47 in OT.  Jordan Wells and Preston Armstrong were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Thespian Troupe Competes at State Convention Recently, the LCM High School Thespian Troupe travelled to their annual State Theater Convention in Houston, TX. The students prepared many pieces for competition and did very well! The duet acting team of Andrew Borel and Aaron Alford scored 1 Superior rating and 2 Excellent. The group acting team of Jessi Hyder, Emily Dodd, and Breanne Willey scored an Excellent. Kelsey Strother, in monologue, also scored an Excellent, as well as Hunter Sheard making an Excellent in Solo Mime. Additionally, Borel, Alford, and Strother were all offered full-ride scholarships for 1 year for their exceptional talent in Theater at San Jacinto College in Houston! The group is under the direction of Theater Director Cory Broom.

LCM JV Lady Bears at Orangefield Tournament The LCM JV Girls basketball team consisting of Cassidy Webster, Josie Nimitz, Sterling Miller, Kyana Petersen, Emalee Carlton, and Megan Reinhardt competed in the Orangefield Basketball Tournament.  The girls blew out district foe Vidor 56-25 and took down Orangefield for the third time this season to advance to the championship game against the Ozen Panthers.  The Lady Bears went down early and, although they outscored Ozen over the next three quarters, never could manage to catch the Panthers losing 44-35.  The JV girls finished 2nd in the tournament and are now 9-5 on the season. 

Orange Jaycees Christmas Parade Winners Announced Congratulations to the following LCM organzations for their winning entries from the Orange Jaycees Christmas Parade, held Friday, December 2--LCM Honeybears - 1st place, Marcing Division and LCM Leo Club - 1st Place, General Division.

Lady Bear Basketball in Silsbee Tournament The Lady Bear Varsity Basketball team competed in the Silsbee tournament on Thursday, December 8, defeating Kirbyville 33-24 with a dominating performance inside.  Kayleigh Roy had another tremendous performance, dropping in another double-with 20 points, 22 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, and 2 steals.  Kelsey Fults also pulled down 14 rebounds to go with her 8 points.  The Lady Bears will move into bracket play on Friday afternoon when they face Silsbee.

Boys Basketball at HJ Marathon In the Hardin-Jefferson Marathon, on Thursday, December 8, LCM defeated Tatum 60-48.  Christian Wendt, Kenny Smith and Jordan Wells each scored 12 points.  LCM lost to Barbers Hill 60-57, with Jordan Wells making 20 points.

Varsity Lady Bears Face Livingston The Varsity Lady Bears came up short in the final minutes to give Livingston a 31-28 victory on Tuesday, December 6. Kayleigh Roy gave the Lady Bears another outstanding effort, playng the entire game and finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Carley Greene helped lead the defensive effort with 5 big steals and some huge assists inside. Next week, the Lady Bears host Nederland and Lumberton at home, looking to head into the Christmas break with two big district wins.

JV Lady Bears Improve to 10-5 The JV Lady Bears defeated Livingston on Tuesday, December 6, with a big win to open district play and improve to 10-5 on the season. Kyana Petersen and Meagan Reinhardt provided a strong inside presence and fellow post Emalee Carlton turned in her best game thus far. Congrats to the girls on another great game!

9th Grade Lady Bear Basketball The 9th grade Battlin' Lady Bears took the court Tuesday, December 6, and played against their first district opponent--the Lady Lions of Livingston. The Lady Bears dismantled the Lions and improved to 1-0 in District and 5-2 overall. Tori Thompson had an oustanding game and racked up more points, rebounds, and blocks. Kayla Netherly and Kirty Weatherly smothered the Lady Lions with excellent defense. Alexis Sezer stepped up in her role as a point guard and created several plays for the Lady Bear offense and also scored points of her own. Malayzia Winbush had a good game again coming off injury. Angel Villanueva and Lupe Cisneros displayed the Lady Bear hustle and determination! The Lady Bears take the court again on Friday, December 8, against Bridge City. Way to go, Lady Bears!

Boys Basketball Team Advances in YMBL Tournament In the first round of the YMBL Tournament, Preston Armstrong hit the game winning shot with 4 seconds left to lead LCM to a 46-44 win over Port Arthur Memorial on Thursday, December 1.  Armstrong finished with 15 and Jordan Wells scored 17. Go, Bears!

Lady Bears Basketball Team Advances to Championship Game In the Evadate Tournament, the Lady Bear Varsity Basketball Team defeated Baytown Christian Academy 58-21 on Thursday, December 1. The Lady Bears put forth a strong defensive effort holding Baytown to just 7 points in the second half. Kayleigh Roy had an outstanding game, dropping in 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 3 steals. The Lady Bears will play on Friday, December 2, where a win will send them to the championship game on Saturday. Go, Lady Bears!

Boys Basketball vs. Hamshire-Fannett  The LCM Bears Varsity Basketball Team lost 46-44 in overtime to Hamshire-Fannett on Tuesday, November 29, at the Bear Cave. Jordan Wells made 16 points and Preston Armstrong added 11.

LCM HS Wins National Award Special Olympics has named LCM High School an “Ideal Inclusion School.” A representative of the organization from Washington, D.C. will be at our Second Annual Bear Bowl on December 1 to present this national award. The game begins at 6 p.m. in Bear Stadium and admission is free. The Second Annual Bear Bowl lets Varsity players team up with Team Force (Life Skills) students to play tag football. Students may also participate with cheerleaders, Grizzly Crew, Honey Bears drill team, and the band as well. Go, Bears! Let's pack the stadium to show our support for the groundbreaking work of our student/teacher team at LCM HS.

Thespians Donate to Savation Army Recently, the LCM High School Thespian Troupe, an International Theater Society that exists in various chapters all over the world, sponsored a drive for the Salvation Army and collected canned goods as well as coats and blankets for many needy families as the Holiday Season approaches. Pictured are a few members of the Thespian Troupe at the Salvation Army with Orange Captain Michael Cox. LCM Theater Director Cory Broom is the sponsor.

Lady Bear Basketball Team Wins The girls varsity basketball team defeated Bridge City 52-35 on Friday, November 18. Kayleigh Roy led all scorers, dropping in 16 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Sophomore Kelsey Fults added a double double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore Carley Greene added 10 points and 4 steals. The Lady Bears take on Goose Creek Memorial at home on Tuesday, November 22. Way to go, Lady Bears!

Boys Basketball Team Wins The boys varsity basketball team won 57-43 over Kelly on Friday, November 18.

Brasseaux Plays in Florida Tournament Senior Brooke Brasseaux was one of four girls who represented Southeast Texas in a golf tournament at the Fold Hall of Fame in Florida on November 21 and 22. The team, sponsored by “The First Tee” organization, represented the Babe Zaharias Foundation. (This is the 100th anniversary of Babe’s birthday, so “The First Tee” chose to take four girls from this area as a team to play.) Over the summer Brooke received "The First Tee" Leadership Award from this same organization at a banquet and ceremony at Lamar University.

Bear Stage Players Present "My Cousin Lino" The LCM Bear Stage Players, under the direction of Cory Broom, presented their second fall production Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 18-20.  "My Cousin Lino" tells the story of Katherine and Jonathan Prescott, who are hysterical when their cousin Lino, a famous Italian botanist, cancels his visit at the last minute. Katherine had planned for him to be the guest speaker at an important flower society fundraising dinner. Her brother, Jonathan, had wanted Lino to impress his upper-crust girlfriend. So when Jonathan's long-lost but quick-witted friend Robert shows up, Jonathan convinces him to play Lino. Trouble is, Robert's Italian (limited to pizza menus) and knowledge of plants (they're green) could torpedo this sophomoric plan. Of course, the worst happens! Zany dinner guests soon force the imposter to start running and hiding. Cast members included Aaron Cordeau, Aaron Alford, Bailey Gilbeaux, Kelsey Strother, Trevier Gonzalez, Alexa Guilbeau, Breanne Willey, Hannah Lea, Ashlee Meadows, Hunter Sheard, Jessica Hyder, Austin Lopez, Kaitlyn Stewart, and Emily Dodd. Crew for the show was Jasmine Ruiz, Drew Frederick, Mason Myers, and Aaron Thibodeaux.

NHS Induction This year's National Honor Society Induction, on Thursday, November 11, included seniors Kendall Green, Jessica Hyder, Ashley McConnell, and Joshua Willis and juniors Caleb Bickham, Zoe Casteel, Rebecca Davis, Trevier Gonzalez, Jessica Hanson, Tyler Howlett, Harman Kaur, Sean Laughlin, Sarah Lea, Bryce Lemoine, Jacob Martin, Jimmy Mathis, Levi Morris, Brandon Perry, Kailey Rountree, Sarah St. John, Alex Sezar, Demi Sheppard, James Swan, Christian Wendt, and Lacy Woodard.  Jane Dunn, high school chemistry teacher and 2009-2010 Secondary Teacher of the Year for LCM CISD, Region V Eduation Service Center, and one of three finalists for the Tecas Secondary Teacher of the Year, was the guest speaker. Congratulations!

Swim Team at Lufkin Meet  LCM swimmers fared well at the Lufkin meet! Savannah Sheppard cut time in the breast stroke to place in the top 10, and she placed in the top 10 in the 50 Free as well. Ivy Casteel broke school records in both the 50 free and 100 free, placing 3rd in the 50 free and 4th in the 100 free. Way to go, girls!

Lady Bear Basketball Success The Lady Bear Basketball teams traveled to West Orange Stark on Friday, November 11, and came away with a sweep.  The JV outscored the Lady Mustangs 54-20.  Every team member scored, with Cassidy Webster leading the way with 18 and Emalee Carlton dropping in 10.
The Varsity team then defeated West Orange 47-25, led by a strong rebounding effort of Kelsey Fults, Kayleigh Roy, and Tara Thompson.  Sophomore Katherine Burns led all scorers with 14 points, connecting on 10-15 free throws. Thompson added 12 points and 9 rebounds for the Lady Bears, and Roy had a great overall performance, dropping in 10 points, as well as adding 9 rebounds and 3 steals.  Carley Greene provided a huge defensive spark in the second half, converting six points off 3 steals. Go, Lady Bears!

All-District Volleyball Team Named Congratulations to the following LCM Lady Bears for making the All-District Volleyball Team: Megan Kemp (Offensive player of the Year), Alex Hackett (1st team), Mallarie Hearn (1st team), Brett Peveto (1st team), Kourtney Derouen (2nd team), Demi Sheppard (Honorable Mention), and Josie West (Honorable Mention), and Congratulations!

Lady Bear Basketball Begins The Lady Bear Basketball teams opened their season Tuesday, November 8, against Kirbyville. The JV pulled off a resounding 37-14 win. Kyana Petersen led all scores with 11 points and Cassidy Webster added 10. The Varsity team fought hard but came up short in a battle of youth versus experience. Sophomore Kelsey Fults led the Lady Bears with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Kat Burns added 8 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals. The Lady Bears will travel to West Orange on Friday, November 11.

Volleyball Team is Bi-District Champs! After advancing to Area, on Saturday, November 5, the LCM Lady Bears lost to Magnolia 3-0 to end the season 27-15. Brett Peveto - 6 kills, 1 block, 2 digs; Mallarie Hearn - 6 kills, 13 digs; Megan Kemp - 4 kills, 2 digs; Megan Romero - 2 kills, 1 dig; Haylea Hearn - 1 kill, 1 dig; Kourtney Derouen - 12 assists, 4 digs; Alex Hackett - 6 digs; Jade Piper - 1 kill; Demi Sheppard - 6 digs; Josie West - 8 assists, 2 digs; Sarah Woods - 1 kill.
To get to Area, the Lady Bears beat Dayton for the Bi-District championship on Tuesday, November 1. Congratulations, Lady Bears, on a great season!

JV Footbal Team = District Champs!  The LCM Junior Varsity Battlin’ Bears finished the season 9-1 and won the District Championship with a 35-15 win over the Nederland Bulldogs on Thursday, November 3. The Bears had a great season, averaging 25 points a game and holding their opponents to 10 or less points a game. Offensive standouts for the season were Quarterback Caleb Harley, WR Dalton Doyle, WR Teandre Gant, WR Quinton Johnson, and the Bear Offensive line (Robert Philpott, Slade Ferguson, Dustin Daigle, Rolando Benitez, and Jacob Hryhachuck). Defensive standouts for the season were OLB Logan Nash, OLB Jacob Richard, DL Coy Laughlin, DL Caleb Green, LB Troy Angelo, CB Austin Lopez, and CB Josh Provost. Way to go, Bears!

Cross Country Regionals Results On Saturday, November 5, the Cross Country Team ran at the Regional meet at Atascocita High. Peyton Burns ran an outstanding race and finished 13th in a pack of about 150! She ran her 2 mile race at 11:56. Peyton has had a great year! Aaron Lilly, James Armstrong, Logan Morris, and Justin Ward competed for the LCM Boys Team and ran a great race. Congrats on a great year!

LCMHS Recognized for Science Education Congratulations to LCM High School for being named as a 2011 NCEA Higher Performing School in Science Education for the 3rd year in a row. The list identifies those elementary, middle, and high schools in Texas that have consistently outperformed their peers with similar student populations over a three-year period (the 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 school years). NCEA identified the Higher Performing Schools based on one or both of two measures: 1) academic growth of students and/or 2) achievement of students on the TAKS Commended standard. NCEA's identification of Higher Performing Schools is more selective than the Texas Education Agency's Exemplary or Recognized list and comprises just over 10% of public schools in the state. LCMHS and Mauriceville Middle School were the only campuses in Orange County that made the list! Way to go, Bears!

Volleyball Team in Playoffs Congratulations to the 9th, JV, and varsity volleyball teams for defeating Ozen in district action on Tuesday, October 25. The varsity finishes the regular season 11-3 in district and is tied with PNG for second. On Saturday, October 29, LCM played PNG to determine 2nd and 3rd place for playoffs. LCM won 3-1 and will be ranked 2nd for playoffs!

Freshman Volleyball Summary The freshman volleyball team ended their great season with a 9 and 5 district record. Great efforts by all the freshman players: Kallye Harris, Danyelle Hodges, Kirty Weatherly, Kender Myers, Corrie Terry, Ally Wray, Alisha Block, Bailee Burnett, Darby Strother, Hailee Sasser, and Malayzia Winbush. Great season, girls!
Cross Country Members Advance to Regionals Congratulations to the cross country team for such a great showing at the district meet on Tuesday, October 25!  Payton Burns won the girls 2-mile race with a time of 12:17.48 beating the second place runner by 37 seconds.  Aaron Lilly finished in 6th place with a time of 18:02.64, James Armstrong finished in 8th place with a time of 18:20.55, and Logan Morris finished in 9th place with a time of 188:28.05.  Justin Ward, Michael Chen, and Travis White were the other runners on the team and with their contributions the boys team finished in 2nd place and will all compete at the Regional meet on November 5.  Way to go, team, and good luck at regionals!

Homecoming King and Queen Congratulations to Kourtney Derouen and Kyle Herfurth for being named the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen on Friday, October 21.

Lady Bears in Playoffs The LCM Lady Bear varsity volleyball team clinched a playoff spot Friday, October 21, by defeating PNG 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-7. Kourtney Derouen - 2 aces, 31 assists, 10 digs; Alex Hackett - 2 aces, 27 digs; Haylea Hearn - 14 kills, 7 digs; Mallarie Hearn - 11 kills, 1 ace, 33 digs; Megan Kemp - 16 kills, 5 blocks, 1 ace, 5 digs; Brett Peveto - 9 kills, 3 blocks, 3 digs; Megan Romero - 5 kills, 3 blocks, 1 assist, 1 dig; Kayleigh Roy - 6 kills, 5 blocks, 5 digs; Demi Sheppard - 1 ace, 12 digs; Josie West - 1 ace, 20 assists, 8 digs. Way to go, Lady Bears!

JV Football Remains Undefeated On Thursday, October 20, the LCM Bears JV football team continued their undefeated season with a 12-6 Win over PNG that came in the last seconds of the game. The Bear defense played great as always. Caleb Green, Austin Lopez, Troy Angelo, Jallen Griffen, and Logan Nash had great games for the Bears. The Bear defense also had 4 fourth down stops on the night—the most crucial one coming in the fourth quarter with 40 seconds left to go in the game.
On offense the Bears were a little slow getting started but picked up the pace in the second half. Caleb Harley started the scoring on a 25 yard strike down field to Dalton Doyle to tie the game up at 6-6 with 2 minutes left to go in the game. After a huge fourth down stop by the defense, the Bears got the ball back with 30 seconds left in the game. On the first play, Harley found Teandre Gant for a 15 yard gain down to the 12 yard line. Two plays later, Teandre Gant plunged into the end zone for the winning score with less than 10 seconds left to go in the game.  The win brings the Bears to 8-0 on the season and in first place in the District standings.  Next week the Bears play their last home game of the season against Livingston on Thursday, October 27, at 6:00.  Come out and cheer on the Bears.

Band Earns Superior and Advances to Area Congratulations to the LCM Battlin' Bear band, which competed in the Region 10 Marching Contest in Port Neches on Saturday, October 15. LCM was one of four 4A bands to achieve a "Superior" rating and one of three 4A bands to advance to area competition at Galena Park on Saturday, October 22. The band's style and showmanship were the talk of the contest. Congratulations and good luck to our band students!

Cross Country Meet Results Congratulations to the Cross Country team for the great job they did at the Jesuit Strake meet on Saturday, October 15! Payton Burns tied for 6th place in a pack of 150 and ran her personal best time of 11:40! Aaron Lilly and James Armstrong also ran their personal best times in the boys 5K with Aaron running a 17:09 and James a 17:40. Danielle Deramus and Jodee Chesson also set personal records in their 2 mile race. The team will host the District 4A meet on Tuesday, October 26, at Claiborne Park.

FFA Does Well at Livestock Show/Art Show At the Orange County Livestock Show and Orange County Junior Art Show at Mauriceville, senior Chelsea Rash entered a photograph in the Art Show and received 1st place in the High School Division. Sophomore Taylor Swarers received 2nd place in the High School Division for a photograph in the Art Show. In the Livestock Show, on Friday, October 14, senior Jared Wilson got 12th place overall for his chickens.  On Saturday, October 15, Jared sold his chickens in the live auction and received $700 and also received many add-ons from businesses and community members. Junior Alex Fontenot also exhibited chickens and received 16th place overall and sold his chickens in the live auction for $400 and received many add-ons as well. Freshman Abby Turner showed her chickens and rabbit project and received Reserve Grand Champion Chicken and Reserve Grand Champion Rabbit. In the live auction, she sold her rabbits for $500 and sold her chickens for $500 and received many add-ons. Also at the show, the Orange Co. Go Texas Committee hosted a BBQ Cook-off.  Junior Wyatt Brown entered this competition and he and his team took 2nd place in the brisket division. The LCM FFA did very well in the Art Show, the Livestock Show and Auction, and the BBQ Cook-off.  We are very proud of our FFA Bears.  Congrats to all the participants!

Freshman Football Team Defeats Vidor - The Freshman Battlin’ Bears found themselves down by 14 in the first quarter to the Pirates of Vidor on Thursday, October 13. Where most teams would give up and throw in the towel, the young men of LCM turned away from the scoreboard and turned on the resilience. The Battlin’ Bears made it 14-6 going into halftime with a key drive. The defense stepped up in the second half and allowed the Pirates in the endzone only one more time. The offense got in the mix by adding 20 more points to their own score to make it 26-20, the final score of the game. Jake Sonnier had three touchdowns and a 2 pt conversion. Coby Roddy also had a touchdown. Other offensive standouts included Robert Green, Dylan Gruber, Ryan Burke. Defensive standouts included Tyler Brack, Taylor Hulsey, Lincoln Causey, Marvin Brown, Jerel Taylor, Ethan Reed, Lane Taylor, Dylan Gruber, Coby Roddy, Drayton Sanders and Robert Green. The Battlin’ Bears will travel to The Reservation next week where they face the PN-G Indians.

JV Football Team Undefeated On Thursday, October 13, the LCM Bears JV football team continued their undefeated season with a 20-14 hard fought win over the Central Jaguars in a battle at Battlin Bear stadium. The Bear defense played great as always. Defensive linemen Coy Laughlin, Jacob Richard, Logan Nash, and Slade Ferguson pressured plugged holes in the Vidor offensive line all night. The Bears defense caused 3 fumbles, recovering 2 of them while Hunter Harbert also had a interception late in the game that helped seal the deal for the Bears.
On offense, the Bears used a little razzle-dazzle to get on the Board. Caleb Harley started the scoring on a pass to Teandre Gant. On the next possession Gant also had a deep throw of his own when he hit Quinton Johnson on a 30 yard throwback play. After hitting Johnson, Gant once again found the endzone when Harley hit him in stride for a 20 yard touchdown pass. Right before the half, the Bears capped off their scoring with a 50 yard drive in the final minute of the half. On a critical 3 and goal from the ten, Caleb Harley found Dalton Doyle in the endzone with only 5 seconds left. After a successful 2 pt conversion to Ky Taylor, the Bears took the lead 20-6 and never looked back. The Bears will be looking to stay undefeated next week when they play the Vidor Pirates at home.

Debater Casteel Takes 2nd Place  On Saturday, October 8, the Battlin Bears debate squad attended the West Hardin tournament.  Novice Lincoln-Douglass (LD) debater Ivy Casteel took 2nd place in the Championship LD division.  Congratulations, Ivy!

JV Football vs. Central Jaguars  The LCM Bears JV football team Continued their undefeated season with a 42-12 win over the Central Jaguars in dominating fashion on Thursday, October 7.  The Bear defense played great as always.  Defensive linemen Coy Laughlin, Jacob Richard, Logan Nash, and Caleb Green pressured the Ozen quarterback all night. Overall the defense caused 4 fumbles, recovering 2 of them.  The stingy Bear defense also scored twice on defense with a 60 yard interception return by Dalton Doyle and a blocked punt and score by Logan Nash.
On offense, the Bears were able to keep the Panthers off balance all night, running and passing the ball with success.  Caleb Harley led the bears passing with 4 touchdowns through the air and 140 yards passing.  Teandre Gant caught one of the touchdowns, while Dalton Doyle caught the other 3. The Bears will be looking to stay undefeated next week when they play the Vidor Pirates at home. Go, Bears!

FFA Earns 2nd Place at District Wildlife Contest - The FFA participated in the District Wildlife Contest Thursday in Lumberton. The students who participated were sophomores Savannah Shepherd and Jacob Alred and juniors Julian Edwards, Alex Fontenot, Nathan Howlett, Alec Lawson, Brandon Morgan, and Jedd Tate. Our team took 2nd place and qualified to compete at the Regional Competition in November.  Alex Fontenot was also the 2nd place high point individual in the district.  Way to go Bears!! 

Varsity Volleyball Improves to 5-2 Congratulations to the Varsity volleyball team for defeating Ozen 25-21, 20-25 25-23, 25-22 on Friday, September 30. LCM is now 5-2 in district. Way to go, Lady Bears!

Varsity Football vs. Ozen The LCM Battlin' Bears dropped to 1-1 in district as they fell to Ozen 21-13 on Friday, September 30. The Bears are now 4-1 for the season. Quarterback Brilon Douglas rushed for 60 yards and scored a touchdown. Tailback Alex Sezer had 84 yards and 16 carries and a touchdown. The Bears visit Beaumont Central next week. Let's go, Bears!

Freshman Football Teams Now 2-0 The hunt continued on Thursday, September 29, as both the Green and Gold Freshman Battlin' Bear football teams took down the Ozen Panthers to improve to 2-0 in district play. The defense shut out the Panthers for three quarters and the offense drove the ball at will for a 27-6 victory. Jake Sonnier threw two touchdown passes to playmakers Coby Roddy and Dylan GruberSonnier also connected with Tristan Stringer and Ryan Burke. Chris Shilz had a touchdown pass of his own by throwing to tight end Drayton Sanders. The Bears' running backs who took down the Panthers included Ryan Burke, Tynan Marr, Austin White, Brandon Mazzola, and Robert Green. Ryan Burke led the way and picked up another touchdown, which is a huge credit to all of the offensive linemen who made the holes. The defense snuffed out the spirit of the Ozen squad and was stifling all night. Defense standouts were Taylor Hulsey, Jerel Taylor, Drayton Sanders, Orrin Gillis, Connor Sonnier, Coby Roddy (with one interception), Dylan Gruber, Ethan Reed, and Ryan Burke. The hunt continues next week as the Battlin' Bears take on the Central Jaguars. Go Battlin' Bears!

FFA wins 3rd Place Congratulations to the LCM FFA team for winning 3rd place in the annual Rice Judging Contest held in correlation with the Texas Rice Festival in the contest on Tuesday, September 25. The contest took place at the Texas A&M Rice Experiment Station in Nome. The team was Tanner Sanders, Tyler Sanders, Wyatt Brown, Nathan Howlett, and Alec Lawson. Go Bears!

Region 10 Jazz Ensemble On Monday, September 17, LCM hosted the Region 10 Jazz Ensemble auditions. Seven LCM students auditioned. Congratulations to the following three, who made the All Region Jazz Band: Ryan Adams - trombone; Logan Burns - bass and Paul Daleo - drums. LCM will host the concert on Thursday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m.

Cross Country Team Members Earn Medals Congratulations to the cross country team!  On Saturday, September 24, the following runners brought home medals from the Pleasure Island Invitational: Justin Ward finished 13th; Logan Morris, 6th; James Armstrong, 3rd; and Aaron Lilly, 2nd.  For the girls, Mikaela Stegall finished 4th while Jodee Chesson and Danielle Deramus finished in the top 20.  Peyton Burns ran in the Brenham Invitational and finished 3rd on a very tough course. The team travels to McNeese on Saturday, October 1, for the Cowboy Classic. 

Varsity Football Team Defeats Lumberton Congratulations to the varsity football team for winning 27-25 over Lumberton in the District 20-4A opening game on Friday, September 23. The Bears are now 4-0!  Quarterback Brilon Douglas (left) scored first for the Bears with a 5-yard run for a touchdown. Kicker Trent Manuel nailed the extra point. Douglas later ran for an 85-yard touchdown. The Bears led 14-6 at the half. In the third quarter, linebacker Coleton Boudreaux picked off a pass. Three plays later, Alex Sezer ran 25 yards for the touchdown. Linebacker Preston Armstrong (right) intercepted a pass and returned it to the 38. Alex Sezer ran 26 yards to the 12, which helped Douglas score on a 7-yard run. The point after was blocked. With just 33 seconds remaining, defensive back Shea Richards stopped Lumberton's two-point conversion attempt to tie the game. The Bears return home next week to take on Beaumont Ozen. Freshman Lady Bears Defeat Lumberton Congratulations to the Lady Bear freshman volleyball team for defeating Lumberton on Friday, September 23. They will play at PNG on Tuesday starting at 4:30. Good job, Lady Bears!

JV Football Team Now 4-0 The JV Bears continued their winning ways with a 24-14 win over the Lumberton Raiders on Thursday, September 22.  The win pushed the Bears to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in district.  The Bears were led offensively by quarterback Caleb Harley, who was 6-12 passing for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also rushing for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns. Teondre Gant and Dalton Doyle both had great touchdown catches of over 40 yards each, while Taylor Peveto also had two long catches. The JV Bear Defense held the Raiders scoreless until late in the third quarter. Mathew Chitty, Brady Lyons, and Jacob Richard all had standout defensive performances. The Bears play Ozen next week and look to continue their winning ways. Way to go, Battlin' Bears!

Freshman Football Teams Defeat Lumberton On Thursday, September 22, the 9th grade Gold team won in a blow out with a score of 26-0. The Gold Defense did not give up one first down the entire game! The Gold Offense scored three touchdowns. Offensive standouts were Chris Schilz, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for another; Tynan Mar, who returned a punt for a touchdown; and Draighten Sanders, who caught a pass for a touchdown. Defensive standouts were Eric and Daniel Sharkey along with Tyler Hanna.
The Green team beat a very good Raiders team with a score of 20-14. Jake Sonnier threw three touchdown passes, Dylan Gruber accounted for 2 incredible catches for touchdowns, while Coby Roddy scored on an electrifying 60 yard catch and run. Taylor Hulsey led the green defense, which only allowed two touchdowns all game. Robert Green sealed the victory with an interception. Other defensive standouts included Lincoln Causey, Dylan Gruber, Roqueries Lipps, Jerel Taylor, and Tyler Brack.
Both the Gold and Green teams improve to 1-0 in District!!!! Go Battlin Bears!!!

Team Tennis Undefeated Team Tennis has won all three of their matches so far--defeating Lumberton, Ozen, and Central.  They still face Vidor, PNG, Livingston, and Nederland. Congratulations!

Varsity Volleyball Team Wins YMBL Tournament  Congratulations to the Lady Bear Varsity Volleyball team for winning the YMBL Tournament on Saturday, September 10. In addition to the win,  Mallarie Hearn, Alex Hackett, Brett Peveto made the all tournament team, Megan Kemp was named MVP, and Coach Castino received the outstanding coach award.

Varsity Football Team Wins 54-14 Congratulations to the Varsity football team for defeating Caney Creek 54-14 on Friday, September 9. Hayden Reed blocked a punt which was recovered by Trevor Hulsey. Brilon Douglas scored from 1 yard out to get the Bears on the scoreboard early.  Preston Armstrong next recovered the ball, which set up Douglas to pass to Jordan Harmon to score next. Ruben Alaniz then fell on the ball in the end zone for another touchdown. Alex Sezer caught the ball from Douglas to  score next on a 57-yard run. Sean Shehane picked off a pass and Preston Armstrong caught a 23-yard pass setting up Douglas to score from 1-yard out. Kyle Herfurth successfully threw to Harmon and Armstrong before scoring from the 2-yard line. Caleb Bickham recovered a Panther fumble allowing Trent Manuel (left) to score with a 39-yard field goal. Billy Jones (right) then caught Herfurth’s throw to score again! Manuel made all of the extra points but one, which was blocked! Manuel finished the game with a 29-yard field goal. JV Football Team Now 3-0 On Thursday, September 8, the LCM junior varsity Bears beat the Caney Creek Panthers 13-7 in a hard fought battle. Coy Laughlin, Austin Lopez, Troy Angelo, Logan Nash, and Josh Provost all had stellar games on defense.  Josh Provost also had a 45 yard punt return for a touchdown to give the Bears the lead in the third quarter. On offense, Taondre Gant gave the Bears an early 7-0 lead with a 30-yard TD run. The win moved the JV bears to 3-0 so far on the season. Congratulations!

Jake Sonnier scorched the Caney Creek's defense with 4 touchdown passes--3 to Dylan Gruber and 1 to Coby Roddy. Ryan Burke led the offense on the ground with 2 touchdowns. Taylor Hulsey and Robert Green added to the lead with 2-point conversions. Other offensive standouts included Marlin Sanders, Marvis Brown, Trey Carline, and James Armstrong. The defense punished the Panthers--Dylan Gruber had an interception and Ethan Reed blocked a punt. Roquerius Lipps, Taylor Hulsey, and Ethan Reed sacked the quarterback multiple times. Other defensive standouts included Jerel Taylor, Orrin Gillis, Tyler Brack, Connor Sonnier, and Coby Roddy. Congratulations!

Lady Bear Volleyball Teams Defeat Livingston The LCM Lady Bear Varsity Volleyball Team opened district play on Tuesday, September 6, by defeating Livingston 25-20, 26-24, 28-26. Kourtney Derouen - 9 assists, 12 digs; Megan Kemp - 9 kills 2 aces, 4 digs; Brett Peveto - 9 kills, 3 blocks, 1 dig; Mallarie Hearn - 6 kills, 2 blocks, 16 digs; Megan Romero - 5 kills 4 digs; Alex Hacket - 11 digs, 2 kills, 1 ace; Haylea Hearn - 5 kills 1 block, 1 dig; Demi Sheppard - 9 digs, 2 kills; Kayleigh Roy - 4 digs 1 assist; and Josie West - 11 assists, 2 digs.
The JV Volleyball team also defeated Livingston in only 3 games! Way to go, Lady Bears!

Burns Wins Cardinal Cross Country Classic Payton Burns won the Girls 5A-4A Division at the Cardinal Cross Country Classic at Claiborne Park on Saturday, September 3, with a time of 12 minutes, 41.73 seconds. Ashleigh Jones finished 10th at 13:47.39 followed by Mikeala Stegall at 13:51.92, Jodee Chesson (28th, 16:02.55), Danielle Deramus (41st, 17:07.70) and Hazel Brooks (44th, 17:46.73). Aaron Lilly finished 15th in the Boys division with 18:34.49 while James Armstrong was 16th with 19:04.03.

Varsity Football Defeats Nacogdoches Congratulations to the LCM Bears for coming from behind to defeat Nacogdoches 31-28 on Friday, September 2. At the half, the Dragons led 21-9, with LCM's scores by Jordan Harmon (right) and a field goal by Trent Manuel. JV Football Defeats Nacogdoches On Thursday, September 1, the LCM JV football team improved their record to 2-0 with a 38-14 victory over the Nacogdoches Dragons. On offense, quarterbacks Caleb Harley and Teandre Gant both had exceptional games leading the Bears to 4 scores through the air. Harley was 8-12 passing for 145 yards passing and 3 touchdowns while Gant rushed for 67 yards on 6 carries and also had a touchdown pass of 45 yards. Quinton Johnson, Dalton Doyle, Austin Lopez, and Kai Taylor each had touchdown grabs during the game. The Bears' defense also played another great game. Defensive standout Dalton Doyle finished the game with 2 interceptions. Dalton ran one interception back for a 67-yard touchdown on a great run. James Nash, Troy Angelo, Taylor Ezell, and Coy Laughlin each had standout games. The Bears look to improve their record to 3-0 when they travel to Caney Creek next Thursday. Way to go, Bears!

Volleyball Teams Defeat Orangefield Congratulations to the 9th, JV, and Varsity volleyball teams for all defeating the Orangefield Lady Bobcats on Tuesday, August 30. The freshman volleyball team is now 7-1 overall. Way to go, Lady Bears!

Jones and Burns Place 1st at Rick Miller Relays Congratulations to the cross-country team for their work in the Rick Miller Relays on Saturday, August 27, at Claiborne Park. The team of Ashleigh Jones and Payton Burns came in first in the 4A division of the 2-by-2 mile race with a time of 26:57 blowing away the second place finishers by a minute. Danielle Deramus and Mikaela Stegall finished 10th while Taylor Norman and Jodee Chesson finished 12th. On the boys' side, James Armstrong and Aaron Lilly finished 4th with a time of 24:15 and Justin Ward and Travis White finished 8th with a 26:06. Good job, runners, and good luck at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday, September 3.

Lady Bear Volleyball Defeats West Brook On Friday, August 26, the Lady Bear Varsity volleyball team defeated the West Brook 25-14, 25-14, 25-23. They play Orangefield on Tuesday, August 30. Way to go, Lady Bears!

JV Football Defeats Goose Creek Congratulations to the JV football team for beating Goose Creek 7-0 in a tough game on Thursday, August 25. The Bears defense kept the Patriot offense out of the end zone all night. Coy Laughlin, Logan Nash, and others stopped Goose Creek on multiple 4th downs allowing the Bears to stay in the game. The Bears struggled early on offense, but the team pulled it together in the second half. The biggest play of the game was 52 yard pass from Caleb Harley to Quinton Johnson, who ran it to the 2 yard line. One play later Bradley Bergeron scored. After Slade Ferguson hit the extra point, the Bears were able to put the game away 7-0. Way to go, Bears!

9th Football Teams Split with Goose Creek On Thursday, August 25, the 9th grade football A team defeated Goose Creek Memorial 32-26 while the 9th grade B team fell 24-0.

Coach Castino = 400 Wins! With the Lady Bear win over Memorial on Tuesday, August 23, Head Coach Vicki Castino picked up her 400th career win.  She has coached the Lady Bears for 23 years.  Congrats Coach Castino!
